Hair growth and hair removal - how can you prevent problems?
Achieving smooth, soft skin is important for many of us, but unfortunately we often experience the unpleasant side effects of hair removal, such as ingrown hairs. But what causes ingrown hairs and how can they be prevented? In this post, I've collected all the important information.
What is a hairball?
Hair ingrown occurs when a newly shaved or plucked hair cannot break through the skin surface and grows backwards - under the skin. This can cause painful red lumps, inflammation and even minor infections. It most often develops after shaving or waxing, especially in sensitive areas such as the bikini line, underarms or legs.
The most common causes are:
- Improper hair removal technique
For example, dry shaving, pulling in the wrong direction.
- Accumulation of dead skin cells
These can block the hair follicles and prevent the hair from growing outwards.
- Clothing that is too tight
It can irritate the skin, especially after depilation, promoting hair growth.
How can you prevent it?
- Exfoliate regularly!
Use a scrub or enzyme exfoliator 2-3 times a week. This removes dead skin cells and helps hairs to grow freely.
- Hydrate!
Hydrated skin is more supple and less prone to irritation. After shaving, use a soothing, fragrance-free body lotion or aloe vera.
- Be smart about your hair removal!
- Always use shaving cream or gel and a sharp blade when shaving!
- Shave in the direction of hair growth!
- When waxing, take care of hygiene and preferably choose a professional beautician.
- Try the durable solutions
Laser or IPL hair removal reduces hair growth in the long term - so the chance of hair ingrowth is minimised.
What can you do if you've already developed ingrown hairs?
- Don't pick it, don't push it! This can only aggravate the inflammation.
- Use anti-inflammatory products such as tea tree oil or zinc ointment.
- If you get a pus-filled, painful lump, see a dermatologist - it could be an infection.
Summary:
Hair removal can be part of your daily routine, but it's important to do it with proper technique and care to avoid unpleasant complications. If you listen to your skin's signals and give it a little extra care, ingrown hairs can be avoided - and your skin will thank you for it!
